against the backdrop of globalization and cultural diversification, learning foreign languages and cultures, as an indispensible component of inculcating students, needs students and their family to dedicate more of their time and finance. after thoughtful consideration, i am convinced that such practice of students studying and living abroad is unpractical, given economic status of the majority of working-class family and the actual situation of students themselves.
to begin with, the unbridgeable barrier of studying and living overseas is an exorbitant outlay for the great mass of students. in other words, a large proportion of families cannot endure such excessive charges, considering their income. for instance, a general chinese student who studies and lives in usa or uk does with expending 3-4 hundred thousand rmb annually, which far outstrips affordability of a working-class family.
in addition, the inevitable issues encountered by students who live and study abroad are probably embodied in their insufficiency of learning ability and adaptive capability. undeniably, living and studying in overseas makes it hard for them to accommodate, on account of unacquainted linguistic and living environment. for example, they are not conceivable to overcome the variety of contradictions and issues originated from life and study, which can be mainly ascribed to deficiency of life experiences, inadequate autonomous learning ability and cultural alienation.
admittedly, one of the valid ways is to integrate into a nation where students have deep-felt feelings toward its exotic cultures and customs so as to gain a better understanding and utilization of such a tongue. however, sending children abroad for study is just as mirage within sight but beyond reach for the majority of average families, despite that it is realistic to the minority of affluent ones, as nurturing children, for working-class family, has been even out at the elbow.
on balance, studying and living overseas is an unrealistic practice for the great amount of general families’ children, in spite of existing certain merits of students better understanding the tongue and culture.
